Synthetic vs conventional oil: which one does your car actually need?
Oil is the cheapest insurance policy on your car, and the choice between conventional, synthetic blend and full synthetic is genuinely worth understanding rather than leaving to whatever the quick-lube upsell counter recommends.
The short version: most cars built in the last fifteen years either require full synthetic or benefit enough from it that the price difference disappears once you account for the longer interval.
What actually differs between the three
Conventional oil is refined crude. Its molecules vary in size and shape, which means it breaks down faster under heat and thickens more in cold. Full synthetic is engineered in a lab with uniform molecules and a heavier additive package, so it resists heat, sludge and cold-start thickening far better. A synthetic blend is exactly what it sounds like — a compromise sold at a compromise price.
For a turbocharged engine, full synthetic is not optional. Turbo bearings run hot enough to cook conventional oil into carbon deposits, and coked oil in a turbo is a four-figure repair.

Why cold matters more here than the price does
